What is Interior Design?
The dictionary definition of Interior Design is ~
The art of practice of planning and supervising the design and execution of architectural interiors and their finishings.
You could say this is the "Coles Notes" version, it is a very broad definition and doesn't account for the intricacies that an interior designer not only needs to learn but put into practice throughout their careers. Interior Design often gets confused with decorating, but decorating, or choosing "pretty things" (colours, textiles, coverings etc) is only a small part of the entire scope of interior design.
Interior Design is a science, there are principles and elements that every designer needs to address with every project. Interior Designers have to analyze, plan, design and manage a project, while keeping compliant with various building, fire, energy and safety codes they are governed by, as well as considering the physical, emotional and mental needs of their clients to provide them with contextually appropriate design solutions. With 5 basic principles of design; Balance, Rhythm, Emphasis, Proportion/Scale and Harmony teamed up with the 7 elements of design; Space, Line, Shape, Colour, Texture, Light and Pattern, gives an interior designer the basis to produce some incredible spaces. Design students are expected to become proficient in these areas therefore when you hire an interior designer you can be sure that you are working with someone who has spent a significant amount of time perfecting their craft.
